Bengaluru, Sept 30: The city sessions court has adjourned to October 9 the hearing on a petition filed by Kannada actor Darshan, alleging that he is not being provided with minimum facilities in jail despite earlier court directions.
The petition sought judicial intervention against prison officials, claiming non-compliance with the court’s orders. Darshan’s counsel argued that the actor, currently in custody, has been kept in a quarantine cell, denied adequate walking space, and not given the facilities that undertrial prisoners are entitled to.
Responding to the plea, the prison superintendent Suresh filed an affidavit stating that Darshan has been provided with all basic amenities, including telephone access, video conferencing facilities, bedding, blankets, water vessels, and food trays. The affidavit maintained that certain additional demands could not be met due to space and structural limitations within the prison.
The Special Public Prosecutor representing the government submitted that placing Darshan in the quarantine cell is within prison regulations, adding that undertrial prisoners can be housed in cells deemed appropriate by jail authorities, considering security and other factors.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the sessions court posted the matter for further orders on October 9.
